It’s hard to imagine that Portland’s oldest brewery could improve on their flagship IPA recipe, but Bridgeport Brewing Company just might have accomplished the impossible with the release of Hop Czar Imperial IPA, one of their newest beers in the Big Brew Series.   Although this is an undoubtedly big beer, it has an incredibly unique profile that stands out against the growing crowd of west coast imperial IPA’s.

This 8% ABV Imperial IPA exceeds 100 IBU’s through aggressive additions of Nugget, Chinook, Cascade, and Centennial hops.

Nose/Appearance:  A thick, auburn-colored monster with a tannish pitting head and heavy lacing that clings like a rookie climber to the walls of Smith Rock’s Monkey Face.

Flavor/Body:  A similar, but bolder version of their grapefruit-laiden straight IPA.  This beer is remarkably balanced for an Imperial IPA, and does not flirt with the barleywine territory that so many other “Imperialized” versions of single IPA’s fall into.   This is the closest thing to an Imperial Session Beer we’ve ever had.

Finish/Mouthfeel:  Compared to the perfection achieved in other parts of the tasting profile, the relatively simple finish is a low point for this beer . . . yet still merits a score of 14 out of 15 points.

Overall Drinkability:  Yum!  Are you kidding me?  This Imperial IPA is incredibly drinkable, and remarkably flavorful especially at 8% ABV.  It’s scary good.

Celebrity Likeness:  Marisa Miller.  At the moment, there are very few beers that we crave more than Bridgeport’s Hop Czar Imperial IPA.  This is today’s “IT” beer.”  Attractive, curvy, bold, mysterious, different.

Awesome write-up. I couldn’t agree more with your description or your choice for a celebrity likeness. Just thinking about her makes me want to go open up another bottle of Hop Czar.

  3. […] Overall/Drinkability- We’re going 10/10 for an unpredictable appeal and a strong beer “strange” factor.  This very attractive beer is reminiscent of other great Imperial IPA’s that have washed over the Bend Wild palates, such as Bridgeport Brewery’s remarkable Hop Czar. […]
